This is required by IHRA and NHRA at different levels of competition and if you are running slicks... and it's just a damn good idea to have one. If the front of the u-joint, yoke or driveshaft itself breaks the driveshaft can dig into the pavement or come through the floor and take your legs out. This is meant to prevent that from happening.
